OCD Treatment at ANIMA

Evidence-based treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder, delivered with structure, compassion, and realistic hope.

Overview

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is one of the most misunderstood conditions in mental health. It is not about being tidy, orderly, or particular. It is driven by unwanted, distressing thoughts and the things people feel compelled to do to stop that distress.

OCD responds well to treatment. Evidence-based psychological therapy, delivered properly and at a sustainable pace, helps most patients substantially reduce the time, energy, and freedom OCD takes from them.

At ANIMA, OCD treatment is structured, collaborative, and carefully paced, with a strong focus on safety, understanding, and compassion.

What is OCD?

OCD involves two linked experiences.

Obsessions are intrusive thoughts, images, doubts, or urges that feel distressing or at odds with a person’s values. Common themes include contamination, harm, responsibility, symmetry, relationships, religion, and unwanted sexual or violent intrusions.

Compulsions are what people do to reduce that distress or prevent a feared outcome. They may be visible, such as washing, checking, or repeating, or entirely internal, such as mental reviewing, counting, reassurance seeking, and avoidance.

Intrusive thoughts are a normal part of human experience. In OCD they become sticky and threatening, and each compulsion teaches the brain that the threat was real. This is what keeps the cycle running.

Treatment helps patients to:

  • recognise obsessions and compulsions as features of OCD, not facts about themselves

  • understand how the cycle is maintained

  • reduce compulsions and avoidance at a manageable pace

  • build genuine tolerance for uncertainty and discomfort

OCD Explained

How We Treat OCD

The treatment with the strongest evidence base for OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), delivered within a cognitive behavioural framework. ERP involves gradually and deliberately approaching what OCD says to avoid, while choosing not to perform the compulsion. Where relevant, treatment also draws on acceptance-based and schema-informed work.

Patients often notice:

  • Less time lost to rituals, checking, and mental review

  • Less distress when intrusive thoughts arise

  • Greater tolerance of uncertainty

  • Fewer accommodations asked of family and partners

What Can OCD Treatment Help With?

Treatment for OCD may be helpful for patients experiencing:

  • Contamination, cleaning, or washing concerns

  • Checking, responsibility, or harm-related fears

  • Unwanted intrusive violent, sexual, or blasphemous thoughts

  • “Just right”, symmetry, or ordering compulsions

  • Relationship, health, or scrupulosity-themed OCD

Suitability and pacing are always assessed collaboratively.

What to Expect at ANIMA

OCD treatment at ANIMA typically involves:

  1. A thorough assessment of obsessions, compulsions, avoidance, and triggers

  2. A shared formulation of how the cycle is maintained

  3. Graded exposure and response prevention, planned together

  4. Consolidating gains and planning for relapse prevention

The aim is not to eliminate intrusive thoughts, but to change your relationship with them so they no longer dictate what you do.
